Getting Personal

I’m pleased to introduce myself - Ross McCutcheon, Founder of Lefler Auction.As my friend and fellow auctioneer, Clint Wilson (aka Clint the Collector) once said: now that I no longer have a job or a hobby, I’ve got myself a Jobby! Here’s to sharing some intriguing memorabilia with you all.My collecting journey began around the age of eight. My uncle would sign me out of school and take me on antiquing adventures across Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. When he later retired to Victoria, BC, my exposure to West Coast antiques began - and my fascination only deepened.In those early days, my treasure hunts often led me to Charlie Meeks in Bowness, Calgary - an old-school collector with multiple buildings and sheds brimming with finds. It was the kind of place a young person could happily get lost in for hours.Professionally, I spent many years with the Degussa Dental Division, traveling throughout Western Canada. After hours, I’d squeeze in visits to antique shops wherever I went. One of my favourites was the Indefinite Article in Saskatoon, owned by John McGowan, a kind and knowledgeable collector - and, as it turns out, a former student of my Great Uncle Fred.I’ve always believed that the art of collecting is an inherent part of human nature. University studies explore this, and history shows that ancient cultures also gathered and cherished meaningful artifacts.Collections take many forms - rocks, fine art, stamps, marbles, dolls, train sets, license plates, watches, silverware, folk art, coins, and much more. Whether you collect for fun or investment, it’s a deeply rewarding pastime.Here’s to many happy discoveries - hopefully a few through Lefler Auction.
